The evolution
Read why BEACON reframes Fiduciary · Strategic · Generative as Stewardship · Foresight · Sensemaking.
For decades, board governance has been framed through the influential model developed by Chait, Ryan, and Taylor: Fiduciary, Strategic, and Generative Governance. This framework helped boards move beyond compliance and recognize that effective governance requires attention to oversight, strategy, and organizational meaning.
The challenge is that while the framework remains powerful, the language often feels academic, technical, and rooted in an era when change moved more slowly.
Today's boards operate in a fundamentally different environment — accelerating technological disruption, geopolitical uncertainty, workforce transformation, stakeholder activism, reputational volatility, and the growing influence of artificial intelligence. In this context, governance is no longer simply about fulfilling responsibilities — it is about cultivating the intelligence required to navigate complexity.
That is why BEACON Boards™ reframes the traditional governance modes as Governance Intelligence™:
Protect what matters.
Formerly Fiduciary Governance
The board's responsibility to safeguard the organization's mission, assets, reputation, and long-term sustainability.
Key Question: What must we protect and preserve?
Shape what comes next.
Formerly Strategic Governance
The board's role in helping the organization anticipate, prepare for, and influence future possibilities.
Key Question: What future are we preparing for — and helping to create?
Understand what others miss.
Formerly Generative Governance
The board's ability to interpret signals, surface hidden assumptions, frame complex challenges, and create shared understanding.
Key Question: What is really happening here — and what does it mean?
Why the evolution matters
The shift from Fiduciary · Strategic · Generative to Stewardship · Foresight · Sensemaking is not a rejection of traditional governance thinking. It is an evolution. The traditional model focuses on governance activities. The Governance Intelligence™ model focuses on governance capacity.
| Traditional Governance Mode | Governance Intelligence™ Capability |
|---|---|
| Fiduciary | Stewardship |
| Strategic | Foresight |
| Generative | Sensemaking |
Stewardship. Foresight. Sensemaking. The three intelligences every future-ready board must master.

“BEACON gave our board a shared language for the work we had struggled to name for years. We left the retreat with clarity on where we were strong, where we were stretched, and what our next chair needed to be.”
“It is the first assessment that treated our directors as leaders rather than respondents. The archetype map changed how we recruit and how we run the room.”
